The Interfraternity Council (IFC) was established at Appalachian State University in 1973 as the governing body of the men's social fraternities. The IFC currently recognizes 13 fraternities on the ASU campus, and is comprised of eight executive members and three representatives from each chapter. Even though each fraternity is unique, the IFC helps to unify the individual chapters to make the Greek system stronger. The IFC promotes scholarship, community service, social development, public relations, personal development, risk management, and cooperation among the men's organizations. Recruitment of new members begins with recruitment during the first few weeks of each semester.

The IFC sponsors the Fraternity Recruitment Kick-Off, which allows students to become acquainted with how the Greek system operates, and gives them a chance to meet representatives from each fraternity to see what they have to offer. Invitations to pledge a fraternity are handed out by each chapter at the end of the recruitment period. Fraternities help to complement a student's education process by providing opportunities for leadership, social interaction, brotherhood, and academic growth. Fraternities are also an important part of the University, and often provide the campus with leaders in many areas.

ALPHA SIGMA PHI

Chapter: Epsilon Rho

• Formed at ASU: January 2006
• Alpha Sigma Phi was founded at Yale University on December 6, 1845.
• Today, Alpha Sigma Phi is recognized as a fraternity of quality and stature. With over 60 chapters, colonies, and interest groups, and an active expansion effort, the Fraternity continues to offer meaningful services and opportunities to over 2,000 undergraduates and 40,000 living alumni.

DELTA CHI

Chapter: Appalachian State

• Formed at ASU: 1986
• Delta Chi Fraternity was formed on October 13, 1890, by a group of law students at Cornell University. Originally established as a law fraternity, Delta Chi became the first single membership general fraternity in a professional
  
  field in 1909. In 1922, Delta Chi became a general fraternity, excepting young men in all college majors. 1929 marked a historic year for fraternities. In that year, the Delta Chi National Convention abolished Hell Week, becoming the first fraternity to outlaw this practice. Since then Delta Chi has continued to be a leader in fraternity activites.

DELTA TAU DELTA

• Formed at ASU: October 2006; Chartered: December 1, 2007

• Delta Tau Delta was founded in 1858 at Bethany College in present day West Virginia.  Delta Tau Delta was born of the knowledge that integrity is essential.  The founding principles of Truth, Courage, Faith and Power have provided a guide for both the Fraternity and its membership.

• Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity is much more than a social organization, a place to live or a way to meet people.  Our mission "Committed to Lives of Excellence" drives our actions, programming and essence.  Delta Tau Delta fulfills many purposes from honing its members' leadership skills, to helping them grow personally and providing a nurturing environment to enjoy their collegiate and post-collegiate experience.

• Since 1858 the Fraternity has spread to nearly 200 campuses with over 120 active chapters and colonies comprised of about 6,500 undergraduate members.  For over 150 years, Delta Tau Delta has in excess of 150,000 men who have become members of the Fraternity.  Delt life provides fantastic opportunities like the Leadership Academy, conferences and conventions, service-learning through Adopt-a-School and our new member education initiative.

• KA traces its beginning to 1865, when four men at Washington College, in Lexington, Va., decided to bind their friendship by a "mutual pledge of faith and loyalty."
• Our founders sought to create an organization rooted in the highest ideals of the time. Those same traits of honor, chivalry, and gentility have remained timeless throughout the ages and are the core of Kappa Alpha.

Chapter: Lambda Nu

• Formed at ASU: February 1974
• Kappa Sigma in America was founded one chilly evening in the fall of 1869, as five students attending the University of Virginia in Charlottesville gathered in William Grigsby McCormick's room at 46 East Lawn and planted the seed of Brotherhood. For many weeks the bonds of friendship had drawn these five together; now the need became clear for a formal structure to contain their feelings. Thus, not only did the Founders formalize their friendship, but they also created a fraternity steeped in the traditions of the past and dedicated to the Pursuit of Learning. The new brothers recorded their bond in a Constitution and in an Oath which set forth the ideals and principles to all Kappa Sigs today.

• Lambda Chi Alpha was founded by Warren A. Cole, while a student at Boston University, on November 9, 1909; with the expressed objective purpose of bringing about the association together of college students of good moral character in the various collegiate institutions within the United States and Canada; to foster a high Christian standard of life and ideals, to promote honorable friendship, to cultivate intellectual excellence, to secure for members the greatest advantages in college life, to establish brotherly love, mutual aid, close personal connection between alumni, undergraduates and college, and to bind them together for mutual pleasure and interest in college as well as after life by testing each with courage, self-control, obedience, democracy and courtesy toward all with whom the may come in contact.

• Pi Kappa Alpha was founded at the University of Virginia on March 1, 1868. At the time, the University of Virginia was the fifth largest school in the United States. The University of Virginia is considered the first truly American state university because it was the first to be established totally free from religious control.

SIGMA TAU GAMMA

• Sigma Tau Gamma was founded on June 28, 1920 by seventeen men at Central Missouri State Teachers College (now the University of Central Missouri). Some of our founders were veterans returning to college after serving their country in World War I. Our Fraternity was founded upon a set of six Principles: Value, Learning, Leadership, Excellence, Benefit and Integrity.
• In 1948, Sigma Tau Gamma was the first National fraternity to integrate. Today, Sigma Tau Gamma has chapters and provisional chapters at over seventy colleges and universities. Sigma Tau Gamma is the only National fraternity whose Headquarters is located on its Founding site. Our National philanthropy, Books for Kids, donates children's books to public libraries throughout the country.  Today, over 75,000 men have been initiated into Sigma Tau Gamma.

• Tau Kappa Epsilon was founded on January 10, 1899 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. As of May 31, 2003, 230,544 men have been initiated in the Fraternity. As of May 31, 2003, Tau Kappa Epsilon had 270 active collegiate chapters and colonies throughout the United States and Canada.

• THETA CHI SOCIETY, as it was then known, was founded at Norwich University, Norwich, Vermont, at nine o'clock on Thursday evening, April 10, 1856. It inspires true friendship; teaches Truth, Temperance, and Tolerance, extols virtue, exacts harmony, and extends a helping hand to all who seek it.
